FAQ

How do I Exchange Money?
Within Tulum and around the Riviera Maya US Dollars are accepted at most businesses. You will find that VISA, MasterCard and American Express are also easily accepted in Cancun and by most hotels in Tulum. However several restaurants in Akumal and Tulum accept only Mexican Pesos and US Dollars.

A tip: If you would like to buy something that is priced in dollars it is best to pay with dollars.

You will probably find that you get the best deal if you exchange your US Dollars for Pesos at an ATM rather than at a Casa de Cambio or Exchange House. DO NOT CHANGE MONEY AT THE AIRPORT except on the domestic side, at the bank. The exchange rate at the airport is often one whole point below the bank exchange. There are Banks in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and in Tulum. If you are in Akumal and need to exchange money, the Casa de Cambio is located next door to The Original Akumal Dive Shop and is open 6 days a week, 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM and Sundays until Noon.

But, the best exchange rate is usually found at the ATMs in Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Currently the exchange rate at local banks is stable right around 10.00 Pesos to $1.00 US. (Ranging from 10 to 13.4) Meaning that something that is priced at 100.00 Mexican Pesos will cost you more or less $10.00 US. The exchange rate at restaurants, grocery stores and boutiques is a bit higher.
The gas stations have a very low exchange rate. Try not to use US Dollars to pay for Gasoline.

Where to buy Groceries ?
Tulum has a large grocery store located on the right side of highway 307 as you enter town coming from Nah Alux. However if you turn left at the light you will find the Super Chomak.

Akumal has 1 Grocery Store located in the center of town. “Mini Super El Pueblo”, located just across the street is great for everyday standards. Their selection is limited but prices are very reasonable.

Fresh produce is available in Akumal Pueblo at the “Fruteria”, located on the main street or every Wednesday and Saturday at the fresh fruit and vegetable market in town near the basketball courts.

Costco and Wal-Mart have locations in Cancun and Sam’s Club is in Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Costco and SAM’S both have USDA meat and a good selection of Cheeses and other staples. Cancun is about twenty minutes north of the airport and will add an extra hour to your drive time to Soliman Bay.
You can also swing by the grocery store, Chedraui on Hwy 307 just before Sam’s Club in Playa del Carmen on your way down. A good selection of staples, fruits and vegetables and a nice bakery but few good meats or on the right is the Soriaana Market.

Boutiques and Shopping?
Akumal has 6 boutiques. You can find antique furniture from the Haciendas of the Yucatan, hand woven wall hangings, pottery, Mexican handicrafts, beach wear and silver jewelry.
Each boutique is small and carries unique items that you won’t find at the arts and crafts stands along the highway. There is also great shopping along 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen, a pedestrian walkway lined with musicians, small restaurants and boutiques. Tulum is also full of small boutiques.

Gym and Wellness Center?
If you are looking for a massage, pedicure, manicure or good work out, stop by Peak Gym and Wellness Center is located in Tulum. Peak Gym is very well equipped with brand new free weights and a large variety Medx equipment.

Community Organizations?
Akumal is a progressive community with a strong commitment to protecting the incredible natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of the area.
The CEA, Centro Ecologico de Akumal, Akumal’s Ecological Center is a driving force behind many of the conservation and preservation efforts throughout the region.

“Hekab Be”, Akumal’s Bilingual Library offers continuing adult education, Spanish, English and Mayan Language Classes and acts as a liaison between the tourist and foreign community and community schools.

When is the best time of year to visit ?
Well gosh, that really depends on what you’re looking for. High season begins on around the 20th of December each year. Christmas and New Year’s week are two of the busiest weeks of our year. It is also a great time to get away and enjoy the warm days and cool nights of the Mexican Caribbean. The water is usually very clear with temperatures in the high 70’s. The days are very nice and bright and the evenings cool.

Beginning in May the sea turtles will come out the sea to dig their nests and lay eggs on the Akumal and Soliman Bay beaches. This is incredible and very moving to see. May and June are great times of the year to be here. The water is warm, calm and clear. There are turtles everywhere and rental rates have all gone down for low season. Don’t forget to check out the summer solstice on June 21 from any of the Mayan ruins in the area. Each has its own unique display of sunlight designed by the ancients.

By July the turtle nests have begun hatching. Join our local turtle walk guides to see the baby turtles digging their way out of their nests and heading to the sea. A great time for families to be here. The water is incredible and you are almost guaranteed great weather. Autumn is also great because you can get great rates on accommodations and enjoy the quiet.

What about Restaurants?
Akumal and Tulum have many good restaurants, each unique and pleasing. Enjoy local specialties, warm baked goods, smoothies, fresh seafood and delicious Italian.

Should I rent a Car? A Bike?
If you choose to rent a car we recommend that you check out Travelocity.com. We have found that they have the best rental rates. There are rental car agencies in Akumal and Tulum. The rates are usually higher when you rent locally, but if you only need a car for one or two days this is a great option.
You can find bicycles for rent at several locations around Akumal. Bicycles are perfect for getting to and from town, the lagoon and local restuarants.
The local bus system is also very easy to use. Buses generally run every half hour between Tulum and Cancun. If you would like to visit Chichen Itza or Merida we recommend that you try one of the first class buses. The buses are very comfortable and will definitely take the stress out of trying to find your way around.

How do I see a Sea Turtle Nesting?
Sea Turtles have been returning to the beaches of Akumal and the Mexican Caribbean to nest for centuries. This is our legacy, to ensure their safe return to Akumal beaches for generations to come.

Begining in May and through September, female sea turtles will make their way out of the sea to the beaches where they will hopefully dig their nests and deposit eggs. A female sea turtle may come ashore many times before finally laying her eggs.

It is a very moving thing to see. The huge female lumbering ashore. She is completely exhausted after digging her nest and will have to take many rest breaks as she crawls back into the sea.

The eggs mature in 58 days Right around the begining of July we will see baby turtles dig their way out of their nests and begin the journey back to the sea.
The best way to see a sea turtle nesting or the baby turtles hatching is on the CEA turtle walk. Guided by a trained volunteer, these turtle walks patrol the beaches at night to watch for females and mark their nests. On occasion, when nests are in an area that places them at high risk, the volunteers will collect the eggs and bury them in a protected nesting area.

Travel Tips

Entrance into Mexico:

You must present a passport, no photo copies and a photo Id.  Single parents traveling with minor children need a notarized letter giving permission to leave the country from the other parent.

Arrival in Mexico:

You will first present your papers to immigration, then pick up your luggage.  You will then proceed to the customs check point which is the “stop and go”… You press the button and if the light turns green you walk through, if it is red you will be asked to step aside and your bags may be inspected.

What to Pack:

Bathing Suits, Sunglasses, Suntan Lotion, Sun Hat and a lightweight windbreakers, sweater or shawl.  Bring your Diving Certification if you have itAlso bring your own SCUBA or SNORKELING gear if you have it.  Bring water shoes and one pair of comfortable ruvver soled shoes for climbing Mayan Pyramids, walking and Tennis..  Camers, a small flashlight.  Shorts and lightweight shirts, one lightweight pair of long pants, and insect repellent for the jungle treks.

Ladies:

One or two casual sundresses or skirts if you like to dress up for dinner.  (You can buy colorful ethnic clothing at the boutiques in the area)  After you finish packing … unpack half of what you packed and leave it behind.  You will be happy you did and you will not miss it!

Pemex Gas Stations:

They are everywhere now.  It is best not to ask them to fill your tank.  Ask for a specific amount … 200 pesos is good.  Show them the 200 pesos and don’t let them show you a 20 peso note as if you gave them that.  They like to pull a broma (a joke)  Not a funny joke if they take more of your money!

Is the Water safe?

Many people are concerned about the drinking water situation in the Yucatan.  Bottled water is readily available.  We supply bottle watered in every bedroom as well as in the Kitchen House.  All ice is made with purified water and all restaurants wash their food in purified water  They want the tourists to come back!

Money Tips

It is best to get pesos through an ATM Machine in Tulum or Akumal and any of the larger cities.  I like the machines at the Super Chomak in Tulum …

Beach Health Tips

The sun can be very intense in Mexico.  It is best that you use sunscreen before you even venture into the sun.   A bad burn can ruin a vacation.  Sunscreen is a wonderful thing however be prepared with a with long sleeved shirt as Sunscreen is prohibited in Yal-Ku Lagoon in Akumal and other local lagoons.

Bad Stomach:

If you do become ill the best remedy is the following recipe.  It works every time  Squeeze the juice of 2 fresh limes into a glass, add a pinch of salt and down like a shot.  Symptoms will ease in about an hour.  If it has not stopped in two hours, repeat the treatment and you will feel much better by the next day.  Lime will kill bacteria and microbes in your system.  It is also served with most meals.  use liberally.

Driving:

Driving on HWY 307 can be an interesting experience.  Stay within the speed limit and drive carefully.  If you see a car ahead of you with its left blinker on decreasing speed, this can mean please feel free to pass, or it can mean “I am making a left turn so pay attention.”  To be on the sfe side … When making a left hand turn, in a non designated left turn on the highway,  put on your right blinker and pull over to the right, wait for all traffic to pass and then turn left.  Since the highway is now complete to Tulum it is not as dangerous at night, one should still pay special attention at dusk as animals do move through the jungle and cross the road at that time.

Grocery Stores:

There is a large super market in Playa Del Carmen as well as at Sam’s Club across the road.  In Tulum there is the San Franciso Market on Hwy 307 and a left turn at the light by San Francisco Market will take you to the new Super Chomak a couple of blocks down on the left.  Both have great choices.

Transportation:

Most tourists who are exploring the Mayan Riviera are driving rental cars.  If you choose not to rent a car you will find many white van taxis at the airport that will be happy to take you to your door at Nah Alux.  I prefer to reserve ahead of time with Cancun Shuttle.  You can also use the bus system or at Nah Alux, Mario will help you out … either by calling you a Taxi or being the Taxi service himself,  for a fee.

Heather Sanchez Review June 2013

I just want to tell you that your home is beautiful and Mario & Reyna were absolutely wonderful!  They were so good to us..

My mother in law didn’t make it so it was my husband, myself our son and his two nieces, ages 12 & 15.  The two girls have never been outside of Chiapas so it was such a fantast6ic experience for them.  I was concerned about all of the sea grass and whether or not we would like it but I was greatly surprised at how abundant the sea life is in the bay once I finally resigned myself to using water shoes :) . My son enjoyed snorkeling there even more than Xel-Ha because the water wasn’t as deep and it was easier for him.  One evening (our last) we were coming in from the bay and he said mom look at all these fish – we were almost to shore, so I put my goggles on and looked and we were right in the middle of a huge school of fish that were just swimming circles around us…it was awesome!  We left a small life jacket there (and something else but I forgot what it was ha!) for future guests and we really appreciate all of the little details that you have… we really enjoyed playing uno in the evenings.

I really enjoyed looking around your home, it gave me some really great ideas for details I would like to incorporate in our little home in Chiapas, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bathroom in the kitchen/living casita and the pool was just the right size, not too big not too small.. Oh and I love the little wooden shutters on the windows and doors… :)

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you again for sharing your home with us and let you know that when we finally make it back to that part of the country we will definitely be in contact!  Take care and send Saludos to Mario, Reyna & the girls from our family whenever you are there for a visit.

Take care,
Heather Sanchez

    Fantastic & Relaxing

Left on 01/09/2011 for a stay in December 2010

My family stayed at Nah alux over New Years and we had a fantastic time. This is a fantastic alternative to the big all-inclusives that are all along the Riviera Maya coast. Soliman bay is beautiful and just off the beating track to give you privacy. There are no big hotels on the bay, just other vacation houses so while you do have neighbors, you don’t have that many, The bay is great for kayaking as you are protected from the waves by the reef.
Nah alux: So Nah alux is actually a few buildings if you haven’t gathered that. The kitchen is a separate structure with a full bath and has a couch and dining table. Then the bedrooms are in separate little 2 story houses each room has a full bath. So there is no real living room to speak of, but there doesn’t need to be. There is outdoor dining and the beach of course and patio, it’s great. There is a nice grill for the grillers out there and there is a little pool/Jacuzzi. Plenty of beach chairs and hammocks in the shade. It’s really a nice setting. The neighbors are close by on the north side of the property but nothing too obtrusive. There is an empty lot to the south with lots of lizards and what not, so there is no noise coming from that direction. There is internet there but it was spotty at best. I wouldn’t recommend counting on it, but its vacation and a Nah alux is great place to unplug.
Safety and Health: Nah alux has big 20L drinking water coolers in each room, so as long as you cook and eat with the water provided there is no need to by your own and you won’t get sick. My recommendation would be anything you plan to put in your mouth, be it a toothbrush or tomatoes, be sure the last water to touch it was drinking water and not tap. Nah alux also has plenty of bug killing drops for fresh produce so don’t be afraid to but fresh vegetables and fruit. It’s too good to miss and you just have to take precautions and you’ll be fine. Soak any fruit or vegetable and you will be fine. We had no issues at all, and bought produce from local farmer stands. There are security guards at the entrance to Soliman Bay (there is only one way in) and just lock your doors when you leave and you should be fine. We had no issues at all and felt totally safe. All the press about drug killings in Mexico seems far removed and in fact is. The whole Yucatan is very much a tourist destination, and we felt safe everywhere we went. You won’t be the only tourists by a long shot, I was actually wishing for more locals but the Yucatan really caters to the tourists so here they are.
Snorkeling: It’s so so, and if you have ever been diving you won’t be overwhelmed, but the water is blue and clear and you there is certainly some sea life to see. We loved paddling out and tying up to a buoy and going for a swim. I would also rent or bring your own snorkel gear, but Nah alux does provide Kayaks which is great. We used them every day.
Beach: The beach is nice white sand, but there is sea grass all along the bay so nobody really swims close to shore. But the beach is great for sandcastles, and catching some rays. The beast beach we found was Tulum beach, it’s just a few miles south and just north of Mezzanine (The Thai restaurant). The sand there is powder soft and the waves are fun and it’s shallow for a long ways out.
Excursions: There are all kinds of “adventure parks” nearby to check out that offer all day all-inclusive plans for the family. These are like an adventurous day at Disney, not great for wee ones or Granny but otherwise fun. Note, the tour buses arrive at all sights starting late morning, so for anything you do go early. The ruins of Tulum are just a few miles south and are great to check out, but again go early as it will be packed by 11am. We didn’t appreciate how close we were to Tulum so location wise Nah alux is better than we had hoped. The towns of Tulum and akumal are the closest for exploring. Tulum is a long strip with some a few side streets, but lots of restaurants and shops. Akumal is north and is a beach town. Mostly tourists here but it has a nice beach and the Lagoon is worth doing but again, go early.
Food: We cooked everyday at Nah alux and the kitchen has everything you could need. I would stop at the Wal-Mart in Playa (there are actually 2) on the way down to stock up. But in Tulum the “San Francisco” supermarket was by the far the best local option for groceries. The San Fran also makes their own corn tortillas, don’t miss them! Otherwise there are plenty of restaurants to choose from but you will have to drive just a little bit. Our favorite place was “Lucy’s Kitchen” in akumal. It’s just a stand but they have great ice cream and the fish and shrimp tacos are fantastic.
