Heather Sanchez Review June 2013

I just want to tell you that your home is beautiful and Mario & Reyna were absolutely wonderful!  They were so good to us..

My mother in law didn’t make it so it was my husband, myself our son and his two nieces, ages 12 & 15.  The two girls have never been outside of Chiapas so it was such a fantast6ic experience for them.  I was concerned about all of the sea grass and whether or not we would like it but I was greatly surprised at how abundant the sea life is in the bay once I finally resigned myself to using water shoes :) . My son enjoyed snorkeling there even more than Xel-Ha because the water wasn’t as deep and it was easier for him.  One evening (our last) we were coming in from the bay and he said mom look at all these fish – we were almost to shore, so I put my goggles on and looked and we were right in the middle of a huge school of fish that were just swimming circles around us…it was awesome!  We left a small life jacket there (and something else but I forgot what it was ha!) for future guests and we really appreciate all of the little details that you have… we really enjoyed playing uno in the evenings.

I really enjoyed looking around your home, it gave me some really great ideas for details I would like to incorporate in our little home in Chiapas, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bathroom in the kitchen/living casita and the pool was just the right size, not too big not too small.. Oh and I love the little wooden shutters on the windows and doors… :)

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you again for sharing your home with us and let you know that when we finally make it back to that part of the country we will definitely be in contact!  Take care and send Saludos to Mario, Reyna & the girls from our family whenever you are there for a visit.

Take care,
Heather Sanchez

    Fantastic & Relaxing

Left on 01/09/2011 for a stay in December 2010

My family stayed at Nah alux over New Years and we had a fantastic time. This is a fantastic alternative to the big all-inclusives that are all along the Riviera Maya coast. Soliman bay is beautiful and just off the beating track to give you privacy. There are no big hotels on the bay, just other vacation houses so while you do have neighbors, you don’t have that many, The bay is great for kayaking as you are protected from the waves by the reef.
Nah alux: So Nah alux is actually a few buildings if you haven’t gathered that. The kitchen is a separate structure with a full bath and has a couch and dining table. Then the bedrooms are in separate little 2 story houses each room has a full bath. So there is no real living room to speak of, but there doesn’t need to be. There is outdoor dining and the beach of course and patio, it’s great. There is a nice grill for the grillers out there and there is a little pool/Jacuzzi. Plenty of beach chairs and hammocks in the shade. It’s really a nice setting. The neighbors are close by on the north side of the property but nothing too obtrusive. There is an empty lot to the south with lots of lizards and what not, so there is no noise coming from that direction. There is internet there but it was spotty at best. I wouldn’t recommend counting on it, but its vacation and a Nah alux is great place to unplug.
Safety and Health: Nah alux has big 20L drinking water coolers in each room, so as long as you cook and eat with the water provided there is no need to by your own and you won’t get sick. My recommendation would be anything you plan to put in your mouth, be it a toothbrush or tomatoes, be sure the last water to touch it was drinking water and not tap. Nah alux also has plenty of bug killing drops for fresh produce so don’t be afraid to but fresh vegetables and fruit. It’s too good to miss and you just have to take precautions and you’ll be fine. Soak any fruit or vegetable and you will be fine. We had no issues at all, and bought produce from local farmer stands. There are security guards at the entrance to Soliman Bay (there is only one way in) and just lock your doors when you leave and you should be fine. We had no issues at all and felt totally safe. All the press about drug killings in Mexico seems far removed and in fact is. The whole Yucatan is very much a tourist destination, and we felt safe everywhere we went. You won’t be the only tourists by a long shot, I was actually wishing for more locals but the Yucatan really caters to the tourists so here they are.
Snorkeling: It’s so so, and if you have ever been diving you won’t be overwhelmed, but the water is blue and clear and you there is certainly some sea life to see. We loved paddling out and tying up to a buoy and going for a swim. I would also rent or bring your own snorkel gear, but Nah alux does provide Kayaks which is great. We used them every day.
Beach: The beach is nice white sand, but there is sea grass all along the bay so nobody really swims close to shore. But the beach is great for sandcastles, and catching some rays. The beast beach we found was Tulum beach, it’s just a few miles south and just north of Mezzanine (The Thai restaurant). The sand there is powder soft and the waves are fun and it’s shallow for a long ways out.
Excursions: There are all kinds of “adventure parks” nearby to check out that offer all day all-inclusive plans for the family. These are like an adventurous day at Disney, not great for wee ones or Granny but otherwise fun. Note, the tour buses arrive at all sights starting late morning, so for anything you do go early. The ruins of Tulum are just a few miles south and are great to check out, but again go early as it will be packed by 11am. We didn’t appreciate how close we were to Tulum so location wise Nah alux is better than we had hoped. The towns of Tulum and akumal are the closest for exploring. Tulum is a long strip with some a few side streets, but lots of restaurants and shops. Akumal is north and is a beach town. Mostly tourists here but it has a nice beach and the Lagoon is worth doing but again, go early.
Food: We cooked everyday at Nah alux and the kitchen has everything you could need. I would stop at the Wal-Mart in Playa (there are actually 2) on the way down to stock up. But in Tulum the “San Francisco” supermarket was by the far the best local option for groceries. The San Fran also makes their own corn tortillas, don’t miss them! Otherwise there are plenty of restaurants to choose from but you will have to drive just a little bit. Our favorite place was “Lucy’s Kitchen” in akumal. It’s just a stand but they have great ice cream and the fish and shrimp tacos are fantastic.
