Forget Cancun & Regular Hotels. This is the way to vacation!
Left on 07/25/2012 for a stay in July 2012
We wanted a beach vacation and this was the way to do it! I’ve been to Cancun and don’t like the hyper tourist/consumerism. If you want to get away from all the craziness and just have your piece of beach and a nice home for your stay to cook your own food how you like it, this is the way to go. It can even be much more cost effective if you have a family or travel with friends (as compared to a hotel). The property is stunning and well kept. The attention to detail was very apparent. Every part from decorations, landscaping, colors, rooms, small swimming pool, etc. The owners definitely put their love into this property. The caretakers were great as well. Tony took good care and jumped to help whenever we needed anything. His two young girls (3 & 5?) were a bonus (despite my daughter not knowing Spanish) they had some good fun. She got to a point where she wanted to stay and play with them while we went out on some day trips. The kids loved the pool. It looked bigger to me in the pictures, but is perfect for kids and a nice change for them from the beach and is surrounded by beautiful plants. They provide all the drinking water you need for at the house and laundry can be done by the caretakers as needed. Every day around 12pm we had them get fresh tortillas that someone sold on the road there. So yummy! There is a giant grocery store in Tulum (Chedraui) which is your best bet for food shopping. Some of the other stores were a bit strange since some of the items we are used to in america are not available or are very different in Mexico.
The property is in beautiful Soliman bay that is quiet and private, only about 15 minutes from Tulum city and lots of easy day trips. We would hang out on the beach and at the house till lunch, then take a trip out somewhere for a few hours and return to our “Home”.
I loved being able to just walk into the ocean and snorkel right off the beach. There are a couple small reefs with lots to see only 20-100 feet out and you can stand (touch the bottom) pretty far out which is great for the kids. Then we would take the canoes out further out towards the edge of the bay, tie our boat to a buoy for some extra nice snorkeling (the water is clearer out further as compared to close to shore). There is a good deal of sea weed under water growing right off the beach which isn’t ideal, but I suppose you can’t have everything. There are no waves, so if you want to boogie board you would have to go to a different beach.
You need a car to get around (unless you want to pay a ton in taxis) so plan on that. The house had wifi internet and most of the things you would need in a kitchen (plus 2 fridges). There is no phone at the house so best to bring your cell phone (with international plan) if you need to stay in touch or call around for stuff. Skypeout calls to Mexico phone numbers doesn’t work in Mexico. Telco blocks Voip so you’ll have to use your phone for that, though I used skype to call the USa so saved at least on that.
There are three rooms with king size beds, and all have their own full bathroom (one with an amazing semi outside shower!). There is even a fold out couch which looks like it can go into a bed (located in the kitchen). The kitchen even has a full bathroom and shower as if it was intended as a backup or overflow if you had guests stay with you temporarily.
We traveled with 6 year old girl, 11 year old boy, 14 year old boy and three adults. The boys had their own room, and our daughter slept in a nice cot (That they provided) next to our bed. The one house/room in the back (that doesn’t get ocean breeze) has a/C. The kids made it like an icebox in there! The front rooms have a nice breeze and have fans, which is fine for the most part. The sound of the trees and plants in the wind make it sounds like it is always raining. If you are used to ultra quiet sleep environment it might wake you up a bit, so you can bring ear plugs if you are the sensitive type. Overall it was pretty relaxing.
Would highly recommend Nah alux. Definitely happy with our choice.
